Index Funds

Index funds are mutual funds that aim to track the performance of a specific index, such as the S&P 500® Index. They can provide broad market exposure and diversification which may help reduce risk. Schwab offers two types of index funds: our Equity Index Funds, which follow broad market indexes, and our Fundamental Index® Funds, which follow innovative indexes weighted based on measures of company size—adjusted sales, retained operating cash flow, dividends, and buybacks.

Gain access to an advanced indexing approach with Schwab Fundamental Index Funds. The Funds are designed to offset some of the risks of traditional index funds while offering the potential for higher investment returns when combined with cap-weighted and actively managed strategies.

Advantages of Schwab Fundamental Index Funds:

  • Innovative approach—Help potentially avoid overexposure to overvalued companies
  • Smart investing—Offer low turnover, full market participation, large investment capacity, and broad diversification
  • Competitive pricing—Lower cost alternative to comparable, actively managed strategies

The Fundamental Index approach

The Fundamental Index approach uses fundamental measures of company size such as adjusted sales, retained operating cash flow, and dividends and buybacks to construct the indexes. These factors aim to reduce some of the biases of traditional market-cap-weighted indexes, which can place more weight on companies whose prices have risen and less on those whose prices have fallen.

Schwab Fundamental Index Funds are passively managed and track certain indexes within the Russell RAFI Index Series which are based on the Fundamental Index methodology developed by Rob Arnott and Research Affiliates. Charles Schwab Investment Management has an exclusive license to broadly offer investment companies tracking certain indexes within the Russell RAFI Index Series.

International Funds

An investment in international securities can help diversify a portfolio while giving long-term investors exposure to the returns that foreign securities may offer.

Schwab's international funds offer an easy way for U.S. investors to gain access to foreign markets with no loads and no transaction fees. Keep in mind, international investments involve additional risks, which include differences in financial accounting standards, currency fluctuations, geopolitical risk, foreign taxes and regulations, and the potential for illiquid markets. Investing in emerging markets may accentuate these risks.

Real Estate Funds

Investing in global real estate can help diversify your portfolio and serve as a potential source of income. Schwab offers two funds that have long-term growth potential: an actively managed Global Real Estate Fund that seeks to generate alpha though the use of proprietary research, and a Fundamental Index® Fund that follows an innovative index approach that uses objective measures of company size to select and weight securities in the underlying index.
