Narrator: With Schwab, you have access to extended hours trading sessions, where you can place orders outside of the regular trading session. At Schwab, orders can be placed in the pre-market session from 7 AM through 9:25 AM Eastern time. The after hours session is from 4:05 PM through 8 PM Eastern Time.
Blue pop up window appears with session times
Narrator: You can place an extended hours trade in the All-In-One Trade Ticket, just like any other trade. For this example, we will place a trade during the after hours session. Select Trade, then select All-In-One Trade Ticket.
Mouse clicks Trade, then All-In-One Trade Ticket
Enter the desired symbol and action, and make sure it is a limit order. Under Timing, select Extended-hours p.m.
Trade ticket is filled out
Narrator: Note that you will receive a notice that the extended session is closed if you attempt an extended hours trade during the regular trading session, but you can still select Day + Extended hours or Good Til Canceled + Extended hours to execute a trade during both the regular session and extended hours session if the trade doesn’t execute by 4:05 PM Eastern Time.
Select Review Order and check the details of the trade ticket. When satisfied, select Place Order.
Review Order is selected, then Place Order.
During the extended session, the electronic market will attempt to match buy and sell orders. If it successfully matches your buy order with an identical sell order, the trade will execute. If not, the trade will not execute, and the order will be canceled at the end of the extended session.
Please note that because fewer shares tend to trade after hours, there can be wide spreads between the bid and the ask for a given security. Additionally, some stocks may not trade after hours, and must be traded during the regular trading session.
Continue is selected, then Submit.
