PSR Marquees
The Marquee is the dominant hero featured on the top, or at the introduction, of a web page or digital experience. It’s used to connect with the user, pique their interests, set a desired tone, and draw them deeper into the content.
The Marquee is always the first component of the landing page, and contains the H1.
On this page, you'll find examples for the following Marquee variations available to publish on Schwab.com.

Both offer advantages, but, as with any investment approach, there are also things to consider.
-
How they are most similar
In most cases, both ETFs and mutual funds represent "baskets" of individual securities, for example stocks or bonds.

ETFs or "Exchange-traded funds" are exactly as the name implies: funds that trade on exchanges, generally tracking a specific index. When you invest in an ETF, you get a bundle of assets you can buy and sell during market hours--potentially lowering your risk and exposure, while helping to diversify your portfolio.

Your approach to ETF investing depends on what type of investor you are. At Schwab, we provide the help you need to build a strong ETF portfolio, whatever way you prefer to invest.
Deck-33-Divide > Card-Clear | Retail
As with any investment, it's important to understand the underlying strategy of any ETF you're considering to ensure it aligns with your goals. Below are some key points to remember:
-
Commissions
- Typically, you’ll pay a commission when you buy or sell an ETF, just like any exchange-traded security.
- Over time, those commissions can really add up and become cost prohibitive.
- Not all brokers charge you a commission when you trade an ETF online. Always check before you trade.

Stepped-Guide-Pros/Cons | Retail
Sector ETFs have benefits that are enticing for almost any portfolio, but there are risks to consider before selecting such an ETF.
-
Pros
Portfolio diversification
An investor with a concentrated position in a single stock may want to avoid duplicating sector exposure with a total market fund. In this case, holding sector ETFs from other sectors may help to round out the portfolio.
-
Cons
Impact of outside influences
When outside influences (culture, government, economy, resources, etc.) experience a shift, that shift can have a negative impact on all the businesses within the sector. The result is increased volatility.

Get help building a diversified portfolio
Building a diversified portfolio is a key principle for investing success.1
But with thousands of funds to choose from across many asset classes, getting started can be challenging.
Schwab's Personalized Portfolio Builder simplifies this process by helping you build a diversified portfolio of mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) that meets your needs.
Here's how it works.
First, log in and choose the specific Schwab account you want to build your portfolio in.
Then you'll select the type of investment you're looking for. You can build an all-mutual fund portfolio—either taxable-bond funds or municipal-bond funds—or an all-ETF portfolio.
From there you'll choose your risk profile, ranging from conservative to aggressive. Once you choose, you'll see a preview of our recommended asset allocation.
After that, you'll specify your initial investment. There is no minimum, but we suggest at least $5,000 to ensure proper diversification.
Next, you'll compare and select from the short list of funds chosen by our experts.2
The charts provide information on recent performance history, or you can dive deeper for a more thorough comparison.
Once you select a fund, the Personalized Portfolio Builder automatically calculates the number of shares you need to purchase in order to match your target asset allocation.
You'll choose across multiple asset classes to build your new diversified portfolio. You can customize your allocation percentages to fit your preferences or opt out of an asset class altogether.
Once you've completed your selections, click the Trade button to purchase the funds. You'll now be able to track and monitor your positions from your account.

How are they managed? |
While they can be actively or passively managed, most ETFs are passive investments pegged to the performance of a particular index. |
Mutual funds come in both active and indexed varieties, but most are actively managed. Active mutual funds are managed by fund managers. |
How are they traded? |
ETFs trade like stocks and are bought and sold on a stock exchange, experiencing price changes throughout the day. This means that the price at which you buy an ETF will likely differ from the prices paid by other investors. |
Mutual fund orders are executed once per day, with all investors on the same day receiving the same price. |
What's the minimum investment? |
Because they trade like stocks, ETFs do not require a minimum initial investment and are purchased as whole shares. You can buy an ETF for the price of just one share, usually referred to as the ETF's "market price." |
Minimum initial investments for mutual funds are normally a flat dollar amount and aren't based on the fund's share price. Unlike ETFs, mutual funds, can be purchased in fractional shares or fixed dollar amounts. |
