Charles Schwab is the only place I’ve ever worked. It is unusual to be at a company that long, but when you’ve found the right place, you stay.
I was born in Vietnam back in ’74, so it was obviously a turbulent time. My dad actually worked for the American embassy. One day he came home, told my mom the embassy was leaving and we were able to go with him, and then we ended up at Camp Pendleton.
I think one of the most important jobs as a parent is to guide your children. And my parents had a blue-collar job, so we learned about making money stretch. My siblings and I went to really great colleges, and one summer I took this internship at Charles Schwab, and I really enjoyed helping clients with their financial health. So at the end of the internship, I went to school full-time while working at Schwab, and that was 21 years ago.
At Schwab, providing advice is really a passion of mine. I love the relationships that I have with my clients and feeling like I’m part of something bigger, and it’s always been such a warm company. It’s really about making sure that you really understand their underlying goals and objectives because everyone can figure it out. It’s not this unknown. It’s really quite simple if they know the basics and stay on track.
My parents’ values were about family and working hard. It feels good when I look back on all the client interactions that I’ve had. It’s just so rewarding to know that all that time and effort has really paid off.
